New Zealand Summary of Emission Factors

The New Zealand Ministry of Environment and Government, with expert advice from Toitū Envirocare and Agrilink Limited, developed the New Zealand Summary of Emission Factors. This report covers the following key points:

  • Emission Factors:
    • Default factors - used when company-specific or industry-specific information is unavailable.
    • Compliance - consistent with the reporting requirements of ISO 14064-1:2018 and the GHG Protocol, and aligned with New Zealand’s Greenhouse Gas Inventory 1990–2021.
    • Measurement unit - presented in kilograms of CO2-e per unit.
  • Coverage - the database addresses scope 1 and 2 emissions, encompassing fuels, refrigerants, purchased electricity, land use change, and agriculture. Preliminary insights into scope 3 categories such as working from home, travel, accommodation, freight transport, water supply, and waste disposal are provided.
  • Detailed Reporting - emission factors allow for the separate calculation of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, as well as the total carbon dioxide equivalent for direct (scope 1) emission sources.

Tip

If the relevant emission factor is not included in the database, the dataset guidelines suggest referring to the Auckland Council’s spend-based emissions report or using alternatives such as the UK Department for Business Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs.
