Working with Dimensions for Environmental Accounts

In Business Central, dimensions are used to categorize and analyze data. Instead of making your chart of accounts overly complicated, dimensions let you add extra labels to transactions, such as Department or Project. This helps you track and report on different aspects of your business more easily. For example, you can use dimensions to see how different departments are performing or how various projects are affecting your finances. Continia Sustainability takes advantage of dimensions by letting you set default dimensions for environmental accounts. This enables you to analyze environmental impact across different departments or areas, providing a clearer view of your organization's sustainability performance.

To add default dimensions for a specific environmental account:

  1. Use the Search icon, search for, for example, Facilities, and select the related link.

  2. Select the environmental account you want to set up the dimension for.

  3. On the action bar, select Home > Dimensions.

  4. On the Default Dimensions page, you can now specify:

    • Dimension Code - displays all available dimensions. Select a dimension to set it as the default. For example, Department.
    • Dimension Value Code - shows a single dimension value or indicates a conflict if not all accounts share the same value. Selecting a value sets it as the default for all highlighted accounts. For example, Production.
    • Value Posting - displays a single posting rule or indicates a conflict if not all accounts share the same rule. Selecting a rule applies it to all highlighted accounts. The options are:
      • Same Code - restricts the account to a single Dimension Value Code. An error will occur if the correct code isn't selected when posting.
      • Code Mandatory - requires a dimension for the account but allows any Dimension Value Code.
      • No Code - prevents the use of a particular dimension with the account.
    • Allowed Values Filter - define rules for posting entries with this Environmental Account using the Value Posting field.
  5. In the related environmental journal, after selecting the environmental account for which you just set dimensions, you can verify the dimensions set and the system will prevent you from posting until you comply with all rules.

    Important

If dimensions are defined or adjusted within the environmental account, these settings will override any dimensions initially applied when the lines were imported.
