Overview of business functionality
Continia Sustainability is an extension for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central that supports the recording, calculation, and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions. It is designed to help organizations manage environmental data in alignment with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. The functionality includes tools for defining emission sources, mapping emissions to business activities, and generating structured reports. Continia Sustainability also integrates with other Continia products and Business Central features to streamline data input and automate calculations.
Core concepts and capabilities
Explore the foundational concepts that support the use of Continia Sustainability in your organization:
- Understanding data responsibility – learn how data ownership and accountability are structured in Continia Sustainability. Understand who is responsible for data entry, validation, and review across environmental workflows.
- Emissions calculation – understand how emissions are calculated using a combination of activity data and emission factors. Learn how Continia Sustainability ensures consistency and traceability throughout the calculation process. To learn how to revise emissions estimates even after data has been posted, refer to the Updating emissions estimates with recalculation features article.
- Automatic posting and data processing – learn how emissions data can be automatically posted from business transactions, journals, and integrated systems. This automation reduces manual effort and improves data accuracy.
- Integration with other Continia solutions – discover how Continia Sustainability works alongside products like Continia Document Capture and Expense Management. For example, environmental data can be pulled directly from scanned invoices to enrich emissions reporting.
Functional areas
Continia Sustainability includes a set of functional areas that support data configuration, collection, and reporting:
- Emission types – define standardized categories of emissions relevant to your organization, such as electricity, fuel use, or purchased goods. Emission types help structure your data and guide calculation rules.
- Environmental accounts – map business processes and departments to emission categories using environmental accounts. This allows you to link emissions to specific operational areas and improve reporting accuracy.
- Environmental journals – use journals to import, organize, and manage emissions data. Journals serve as the primary interface for reviewing and editing environmental entries before posting.
- Environmental reports – generate reports that break down your emissions by scope and category. These reports follow the GHG Protocol structure and provide insights to support internal decision-making and external disclosures.
